{Review} CoverGirl Clean Oil Control Foundation

Ever since I finished my Maybelline Mineral Power Liquid foundation I've been on the hunt for something better. I really like that foundation but there were some problems with it. It didn't last very long, isn't really for oily skin, etc, so I would have to touch up a lot more. I've never been a huge fan of CoverGirl's skin products. I love their eyeshadows but I've always been a bit wary of their foundations since the ones I've tried have been a bit on the dry side and tend to look thick and heavy on my skin. I have to say that I don't have either of those problems with this foundation. I think if you have oily skin, you may really like this foundation!!!

The new formulas of this foundation come in three, one of them being for oily skin.

The shade I got was the lightest available, Ivory. It's definitely a better match than the last foundation I got (Maybelline Dream Smooth Mousse). I got this online so I was a bit worried it might be a bit too light because CoverGirl does have a lot of super light shades, but it fit me fine!

What it claims:

It is important to note that THIS ISN'T A MATTIFYING FOUNDATION!!! It's just supposed to be better suited for skins that get more oily. It does have a more matte FINISH, but it will not stop you from getting oily throughout the day. The actual makeup just doesn't contribute to the oiliness.

The biggest complaint I have about this foundation is the dispenser. It's a hole. That's it. With other foundations it is annoying, but not really that bad. This foundation however is a bit thicker, more like a gel than a liquid, so if you just turn it upside down, nothing comes out. I've been using a little spatula from a used up moisturizer to scoop out a small amount each time I apply it. Or you can use a q-tip.

Overall, I do like this packaging better than the old packaging though. It looks more modern and sophisticated. It's got an expensive feel to it, which is always nice.

As you can see, you can kinda see the makeup, but it doesn't look in the slightest bit cakey. It looks very natural. As far as being good for oily skin, this is a lighter foundation. It's light to medium coverage and isn't heavy, which is why it is especially comfortable on oily skins. Other foundations I've tried from Rimmel and Clinique, for example, tend to feel really heavy and thick on my skin, which I really don't like. When I put this foundation on it feels like theres nothing there. It sets quite well, even without powder. I still powder, but if you have combo skin you may be able to get away with out powdering.

I also love how it applies. It blends out very easily, almost like a tinted moisturizer with more coverage. I apply it with my fingers. I feel that it gives me more of a natural finish, where as with a brush you get a heavier application. It's pretty buildable, just pat on the spot instead of rubbing. It looks very fresh.

As far as oil control goes, my skin doesn't look the least bit shiny after application. I have pretty oily skin so I do have to set with powder and then touch up about 4 or 5 hours later, but certainly not as bad as when I used the Maybelline Dream Smooth Mousse foundation or the Rimmel Stay Matte, or my least favorite: Clinique Even Better makeup. Even after powdering, my skin doesn't look like I'm wearing a lot of foundation, which is what I go for with foundations. I really hate feeling like I'm wearing a mask on my face. Thankfully with this foundation that's not a problem. If you've got oily skin, I would try this foundation. It's worked better for my skin than other foundations, even higher end ones, have.

{Haul} Small But Super Exciting!!!

So yesterday my package from Drugstore.com finally came in!!! I didn't purchase much, only three things, but I think you guys will be excited about a couple of them!

What I got:

First, I picked up Neutrogena's newest sunblock. This is their LIQUID formula!!! I think this is the first liquid sunblock I've seen from a drugstore brand! I've used the Shiseido version,but it's very expensive. This one is originally $12.99, but I got it a dollar off! I have oily skin so getting sun protection from cream sunblocks doesn't work for me. I can tell you right now that this one is a winner!!!

I also picked up a liquid foundation. I'm still trying to find something to replace my Maybelline Mineral Power Liquid foundation. I got CoverGirl's Clean Oil-Control foundation in Ivory. I was worried that it'd be a bit too light, but it fits my skin very well. I'll be doing a full review soon, but so far I'm liking it.

The final thing I got is Ecotool's HUGE HUGE HUGE Bamboo Bronzer Brush!!! I've been eyeing this one for a while and when I saw it 25% off on drugstore.com I couldn't resist! It's HUGE!!! I've been using a blush brush to put my bronzer on, so I was looking for something bigger, but not shaped like a powder brush. I'll be posting a full review and pictures of this brush soon, too! I'm super excited about this one!!!

{Review} Maybelline Dream Smooth Mousse Foundation

I finished my beloved Maybelline Mineral Power Liquid Foundation a while ago and then decided to try out the (at the time) newest foundation in the Maybelline family, the Dream Smooth Mousse foundation. I was really looking for something easy to apply, convenient, and above all, natural looking. If that's what you want, this foundation may be a good choice for you!


I have this foundation in the shade 150, Classic Ivory. I bought it at Target and I guess Target doesn't stock the full range of shades, because they do make a shade lighter, 100. I was really disappointed when I got home and found that this foundation is a bit dark for me. I can use it in the center of my face (nose and cheeks) fine when covering up redness. I can't use is anywhere near my cheeks because my face will be darker than my neck and look unnatural. Targets return policy doesn't allow exchanges or returns of opened cosmetics so I'm kinda stuck with it.


It comes with a sponge housed over the foundation in a separate compartment. I like the shape of the sponge. It makes it really easy to hold and get into the little nooks and crannies on my face. It is really good for blending under eye concealer or around the nose. I know a lot of people have reservations about using the sponge, but you can wash these sponges. I've been washing mine every 2 applications (just with regular liquid hand soap) and it does wash out. I also picked up a few extra sponges (circle ones) for $1.99 at Target for when this one gets old.


The actual foundation is a cream/gel formula. I don't know how to describe it. It's cream, but when you rub the surface, it's hard. Unless you really really press hard you won't pierce the surface.


See what I mean? I also noticed that the foundation was already separating from the edges of the compact which had me worrying about it drying out so after using it for a week, I scooped some into an old Mac jar (from a used up Tendertone).

Ignore the glitter! It's not from the foundation. I was just swatching something before and I guess I didn't clean my hand off enough. You probably can't tell, but it's a bit too orange for me. It matches my hand better because my hand is darker than my face, but on my face, especially around my chin or forehead, it looks artificial. Just one shade lighter would have worked.

As far as the formula goes, it's not the best foundation for oily skin. Cream foundations rarely set well on oily skin and tend to give a glowy finish. The finish of this foundation isn't too dewy, but unless you have dry skin you will have to set it with a powder and touch up throughout the day. It blends into the skin nicely. It has a very natural finish and looks like skin, not like makeup on top of skin. It's medium coverage, but you can thin it out or build it up pretty quickly. It won't cover up zits or dark circles, so you'll need a concealer. I do like using it around the eyes on days I don't feel like packing the concealer on. It doesn't settle into fine lines so it works around the eyes pretty well. If you don't need that much coverage this foundation will work for you.

The only negatives I can think of with the formula is that it doesn't last very long. But then again, it is a cream foundation and I do have oily skin. I would use a primer, though, because without one you'll notice that it wears off pretty quickly. The only other negative I can think of is that the packaging feels cheap and unnecessarily bulky. Unlike the Dream Matte Mousse foundation, this one is housed in a plastic, not glass container. The top which holds the sponge is rounded out, taking up more space than necessary with little gain in aesthetic appeal. It feels very light and insubstantial.

Other than that, if you have dry or normal skin, this may be a good alternative to more high end cream foundations. It isn't the greatest pick for combo or oily skin, though.

{Review} Rimmel Stay Matte Foundation in Ivory

I know a lot of people have been curious about this foundation because I have had several people ask for me to review this foundation, so here it is! It makes a lot of bold claims, that it treats acne and will keep skin matte, pretty hefty claims.


The people over at Rimmel really made sure that everyone knows that this foundation has something called a Skinpure complex, which is apparently supposed to help clarify your skin. I'm not just speaking about this foundation but others as well that claim using them will help treat acne. They are almost all lying. At best a foundation won't break you out. But I have yet to come across a foundation, even from more high end brands like Clinique, that on their own treat acne. And I doubt you guys have either because lets face it, wearing foundation isn't good for your skin, no matter how much the cosmetics industry tells us otherwise.


This foundation also claims to keep skin matte. It is specifically oil free to help with this.


"Oil free. Non-comedogenic. Non-acnegenic. Fragrance free. Paraben free." All this doesn't do is save kittens, lol!


I really like the dispenser. I find that many liquid foundations come in a glass bottle with a hole at the top, which is incredibly unsanitary. This one comes in a plain, fuss free, clean squeeze tube, definitely a plus.

I have this foundation in shade 100 Ivory, the lightest they offer, and it is a good match for my skin tone. I don't know if you can see, but the texture of this foundation is very thick. Much thicker than most liquid foundations. It is more like a cream foundation, except much more difficult to blend. That's probably one of my biggest annoyances with this foundation, how difficult it is to blend.

As for it's mattifying capabilities, well, it doesn't keep me matte. But then again, I do have very oily skin. If you are combination or only mild to moderately oily this foundation may work for you. Also, if you don't like heavy foundations, do not buy this. I really like a foundation to give decent coverage, but not feel like a mask. This one feels like a mask. I felt aware of the makeup on my face all day long, which is uncomfortable.

On the plus side, this foundation does give good coverage. I'd say it's medium to full. You can definitely build it up to get a more full coverage. I like the finish, which is very flawless. It wasn't matte on me, but less dewy than other foundations right after I apply, which I suppose is something. And as far as an acne treatment, I haven't used it long enough to really test its effectiveness, but I highly doubt a foundation can effectively treat acne.

In general, not a bad foundation, but it definitely doesn't live up to the bold claims that it makes. If you have combination skin, however, this foundation may work for you very well!

My Current Face Products!

This is just a quick post on the products I've been using the past couple of weeks on my face. I forgot one product, and that's my NYC Smooth Skin Loose Powder in Translucent, which I use to set my makeup. Other than that, this has been it for the past few weeks!

1. Maybelline Dream Smooth Mousse Foundation

I bought this a few weeks ago and I really like the convenience of this product. I like cream foundations because they just go on so easily. I use the sponge it came with to apply. It's medium coverage, but definitely buildable. I use a thin layer to cove up redness, and then build it up anywhere I need some extra coverage, like dark circles (which I barely have) or a pimple. I will be posting a full review of this later this week!

2. Carmindy for Sally Hansen Cream Bronzer in Rio Glow

I use this mostly to contour my face, adding a bit of color in the process. It looks intimidatingly dark in the pan, but it goes on very sheer and smooth. A problem I've had with bronzer in the past is that it looks very obvious that I have something on. This looks very natural in terms of finish. You can barely tell I've got something on. I use a regular blush brush to stipple it on and a little goes a really long way!

3. Jemma Kidd Stain, Flush, Blush Concentrate in Flirt

This cream blush gives me just the right hint of color. I usually stay away from blushes because I spend so much time covering up the redness on my face that I hesitate to put any back on. I use this high up on the cheek bones to give a more contoured effect and I really like how natural the color looks!

4. NYC Smooth Skin Loose Powder in Translucent (Not Pictured)
With so many cream products, it is imperative to set them and I use a bit of this powder. It's a great no-frills product. It does what it says it will do, which is set the makeup. It doesn't do much else, but then again I don't need it to. It gives me a very smooth finish, which I really love. It doesn't really look like I'm wearing much powder at all!

Updated Foundation Routine

In the past few months my skin has been horrible, especially around the side of my face, the cheek area, where I have never ever broken out :'( I've really tried to go back to a stable routine, using only a few products on my face and as little base foundation or concealer as possible. I don't know what caused the massive breakout, but I'm just beginning to get it under control and I thought I'd share with you what I've been doing.

First off, to treat the acne I went back to my cleansing routine. I was using those makeup remover/moisturizer all in one cloths at the end of the night to remove my makeup instead of actually going and washing my face out fully, which definitely contributed to the acne. It just felt like too much hassle after a long day of work, classes, studying..try to fit a social life in and somethings gotto go. I've been using my Queen Helen Mint Jelep Mask and my Acne Free Terminator which have helped a lot! I've also been using a very basic moisturizer: aloe very. Now, I only use this during the day. I'll wear it under my makeup or I'll dilute my foundation with it to make a tinted moisturizer.


To make the tinted moisturizer I simply mix them on the back of my hand, usually half and half. If I need more coverage, I add more foundation, if not, less. It won't work well with all foundations, but works very well with my Clinique Even Better or Maybelline Mineral Liquid.


Simply mix and apply. It gives me sheer coverage and covers up my redness without looking like a mask. This way I only use my Smashbox HD Liquid Concealer only where I absolutely need it. I've been setting with my NYC translucent powder which I will review soon!

I like aloe during the day because mys kin is very oily and sometimes using a regular moisturizer, even my Clinique DD Gel is too much. I don't know what it is about aloe vera gel, but it sens somehow and makes my makeup last longer. Be careful what type of aloe vera gel you use if you do try this. I'm using Jason Natural Cosmetics Aloe Vera Super Gel. It's very affordable, around $10-$13 for 16 oz bottle (depending on where you buy) and it's 98% pure aloe vera. I use it everywhere: after shaving or waxing, being out in the sun, etc. It's a great multi-tasker. I highly recommend trying this stuff out if you need a very light moisturizer during the day. It won't work if your skin starts to dry out in the winter, but as I use a heavier moisturizer at night, it's not really an issue for me. If you try it, let me know how it goes!

EDIT: I put the aloe vera gel into a smaller container from a used up moisturizer because lets face it, 16 0z is affordable but crazy big and inconvenient when doing my makeup in the morn, lol!

Review: Maybelline Mineral Power Natural Perfecting Liquid Foundation

This review is for a product I've been using quite a bit now. I recently finished my CoverGirl TRUblend Whipped Foundation and was on the hunt for a new one. I wanted to try something liquid because I've been told that they're better for oilier skins, and I ended up choosing Maybelline's Mineral Power Natural Perfecting Liquid Foundation.


The shade that I got was Light 1, Porcelain Ivory, and it even has some SPF in it! And it's a decent amount too. Any SPF foundation that has less than 15 SPF is a joke. I'm pretty sure that Revlon's had quite a few foundations with SPF 4. I mean, that's laughable! If you're going to put SPF in, at least have it be a somewhat beneficial amount.

Here's the dispenser:

The dispenser is one of the things that drew me to this foundation. It is a lot more hygienic than the standard one, which is just an opening you dip something into (or use your finger). I though that it would be cleaner (in terms of spillage) than other foundations but really, as there is no stopper in the lid, a lot of product still escapes. I've got to be careful not to leave it upside down or sideways cause if I do, I end up with a lot of foundation on the inside of the cap which gets everywhere. I really like how the dropper makes getting the perfect amount really easy. I never have to worry about wasting product because I took out too much, which is a plus.

You can really see how emollient it is here. A lot of foundations are thicker, more creamy. This one is lighter.

And blended in:

I don't know how well you can tell, but it covered up just about all of the imperfections on the back of my hand as well as the glitter. It does have a bit of a luminous finish, but no shimmer.

One of the things that I love about this foundation is that it matches my skin perfectly! Usually, the lightest shade is too light and the next lightest is too dark. This was the second shade and it is perfect for me. I don't think that I've ever found a drugstore shade of foundation that has matched my skin, let alone this well! The shade selection in general is great. There are fifteen shades to choose from. What separates these fifteen from other brands are the undertones. I saw a few olive and yellow undertones, so if you're looking for those, you may want to check this line out.

As for application, this foundation is really moisturizing, and very light and smooth. I'd say this is a light to medium coverage formula, so if you're looking for something heavier, skip. It applies very evenly, and looks flawless. It gives your skin this luminous and dewy look. My skin looks amazing when I'm wearing this. Lately, as summer is nearing, I've been mixing this with my Clinique DD moisturizing gel to make a tinted moisturizer. This foundation is perfect for this because it's light anyway. I mix half and half on the back of my hand and then apply with my fingers. If I need more coverage I just dab on a bit of the unmixed foundation and my skin looks great without too much product, which I love. I've noticed that lately my skin has been looking better. I don't have as many blackheads or breakouts. I think that using less foundation everyday is responsible for this change. I used to wear a ton of foundation and powder everyday and I've really been cutting back lately. Less is definitely more with makeup.

The lasting power of this foundation isn't great. I'd say about six to eight hours if you set with a powder in the morning and use a primer. That's not actually too bad because all I need is for it to last through class. I'll usually reapply before going out anyway, so it's not a problem for me. If you're looking for a heavy duty foundation, again skip.

Finally, Maybelline makes some bold claims with this foundation. It claims that within 8 weeks you will notice clearer, smoother, more luminous skin. I have noticed an improvement in my skin, but I'm not quite sure of how much of it is due to this foundation. Honestly, all foundations are bad for your skin. All. If a company advertises a foundation as beneficial (as opposed to not wearing any) they are outright lying to you. Foundations clog your pores, cause breakouts, can dry out your skin, can cause premature wrinkles, and just plain old doesn't let your skin breath. I think some foundations are less bad for your skin than others, but I wouldn't go as far to say that foundations are good for you. A friend of mine has got such bad acne and just doesn't seem to understand that caking on foundations and concealers will only exacerbate the problem in the long run. Ann in addition, drugstore brands that advertise foundations as "mineral" foundations don't really inspire confidence in me as a drugstore foundation needs only one mineral ingredient to be classified as a mineral product. As far as I can tell from the ingredietns list, the only mineral that is actually in all the foundations is aluminum hydroxide. The other two included in the list, titanium dioxide and iron oxides are listed under "may contain," so the consumer has no way of knowing if they are actually in the product. I wouldn't purchase this foundation on it's mineral claims.

To leave you on a high note, in general, this is a decent foundation. If you like a foundation that's light and fresh looking with a good range in shades, this is a good one!

Review: Maybelline Age Rewind Eraser Makeup Treatment

As promised, this is a review for Maybelline's new Age Rewind Eraser foundation. It's supposed to help erase wrinkles as it's got gogi berry and collagen in it as well as SPF 18 to protect your skin. I have it in the shade Creamy Ivory.



Here's the applicator:

The delivery system of the foundation is really what makes this foundation unique, although I have to say that it is a bit gimmicky. You're supposed to turn the upper portion of the bottle (the purple part) and the foundation is dispensed through the fuzzy applicator above. Now, this can be both good and bad. I find that the applicator does make it very easy and quick to apply the product, but I hate, absolutely hate, how you can't see how much product is coming up. It's one of my biggest pet peeves with this product.

The first time I tried it, I kept twisting and twisting until I saw the product, but there was WAY too much. The product builds up inside the fuzzy ball and is dispensed when pressure is applied, so if you can see the actual foundation on the applicator, you've twisted too many times. I find this very frustrating because I can't really see how many times I need to twist. Some days three or four twists is enough, other days it's way too much. I really like the pump dispenser better because I can actually see how much I'm putting on my face.

The fuzzy ball really does save time, but if can be streaky as well, so make sure to blend well. I usually have to go over with my fingers because there is too much product on the applicator to blend without applying more product on my face. And if you're worried about hygiene, it's supposed to be made of some antibacterial material (how/what isn't specified) so that if you wipe it with a dry tissue (very important that you don't use anything wet to wipe it) all the germs should be gone. How much of this is actually valid, I don't know.

As you can probably tell from the pic above, the formula is a bit luminescent. It is very moist and reflects light. This may be good if you have more mature skin, but not if you are under thirty. I applied it and it slid around my face, making me look very greasy. The coverage I'd say is light to medium. It's a bit difficult to layer this foundation if you need more coverage because the applicator tends to push the foundation around around your face if you try to apply more. Usually, with another liquid foundation I'd just pat some more on, but that is not an option with this one. It does cover redness, but not altogether. If you need heavy coverage for rosacea or other discolorations you will definitely need to use a concealer.

Another complaint I have is the staying power. Even with powder it wore off in several places after about four to five hours, which I was not expecting at all. And it looks great when you apply it at first. It made my skin look very bright, luminescent, etc, but after a while it did darken and wear off leaving my skin looking horrid.

To end on a high note, however, I love how soft this foundation leaves my skin. Honestly, I was not expecting it to actually come through on the treatment portion of its claims, but I have to say, not bad at all! I would recommend this foundation to people with mature, normal or slightly dry skin, and who don't need a lot of coverage. If you're young and have problems with oiliness/discoloration, this foundation really isn't for you. Overall, I think it's a skip. The concept is great, but it need serious work on the formula.

Review: CoverGirl TruBlend Whipped Foundation

This is a review for CoverGirls TRUblend Whipped Foundation, which I have in shade 405, ivory.




I don't know how well you can see the texture, but it is very smooth. Also, I've heard people compare this to Maybelline's Dream Mousse foundation, but let me tell you, they are two completely different products. This foundation is definitely more liquid-y. Also, I really like how it came in a small, compact glass jar. However, the container get's dirty really really quickly. There is no excuse for it to look like this only a week after I opened it!

I have to say, I was shocked by how well this foundation performed. Unlike other mousse/whipped formulas, it is very heavily pigmented. I would say that this is a mid to heavy coverage foundation, depending on how you apply it. Often times, I would forgo concealer to get rid of redness/discoloration because this foundation took care of it. And unlike other heavy-cover foundations, this one feels sooooo light on your skin! I can't even begin to describe just how light weight this foundation is. I could barely feel it on and it looks very natural, not cakey at all! Usually, foundations with heavier coverage will be heavy liquids that look thick and mask-like, but no such problems with this one!!!

Also, the finish is very matte, something that I absolutely love as I struggle with oily skin. However, even though it doesn't look like it needs a dusting of powder, I would still recommend that you use powder as alone, this foundation doesn't have great lasting power. With powder, it held up well, but it did wear off in a couple of areas, so definitely powder.

Other than lasting power, I would say your only concern may be to find a suitable shade match. I think anyone in the midtones should have no problems, but if you are really light or dark, you may have trouble finding a shade match. Also, if you are pale and yellow toned, the shades will probably be off as the lighter shades are all pretty cool toned. Overall, I recommend this foundation if you're looking for a quick time saver in the morning-it applies quickly, with great coverage, so you may have time to skip the concealer and powder.
